A blog about my adventures in reading…

“Beach Thriller” by Jamie Day

“Beach Thriller” is the third book by Jamie Day that I have read, and the third he has published. He’s one of those authors I know I’ll enjoy reading for one simple reason: at some point, I got really interested in what was going to happen. This is a perfect book to read on vacation, on the beach, or in a garden with a glass of lemonade or another drink of your choice.

The background is a small coastal town, Beauport, Massachusetts, about an hour from Boston. Visitors come to relax; locals stay for different reasons. Holly Sinclair, a writer with one published book, arrives seeking answers about her sister’s unsolved murder or accident. Financially, it makes sense for her to move into her family’s old waterfront beach cottage, once owned in happier times. She reconnects with Serena, a psychic friend, and makes new acquaintances: Gail, a perky blonde real estate agent, and Evan, a handsome handyman. But the most important new person in Holly’s life is Jade, a runaway teenager.

The village has another attraction besides quaint stores, a coffee shop with an annoying busker in front, and a beautiful beach: a mysterious estate where the wealthy Carmichaels live. The residence gives off a Manderlay vibe: a tower always locked and off-limits, a stern and forbidding butler named Sid, and an elegant yet very unpleasant mother. Are there any secrets behind the gate guarding this house? Multiple narrators keep us guessing, and the twist at the end may surprise many readers. It’s definitely an enjoyable thriller.
