“My Husband’s Wife” by Alice Feeney

„My Husband’s Wife” is my first book by Alice Feeney, who is often called the ‘Queen of Twists’, and after listening to her latest audiobook, I think this title is well-deserved. This book is very engaging, with chapters told from different perspectives.  It starts when Eden Fox goes for a morning run by the sea. When she returns to her recently purchased and remodeled, albeit eerie, house, nestled in the Cornish village of Hope Falls, her key doesn’t open the door, and her husband announces she is an intruder. The police are called, and the situation becomes strange and a bit creepy. I was probably as puzzled as Eden Fox and somewhat surprised by the unexpected consequences a healthy morning jog can bring.

While listening to the story, I quickly realized how a good psychological thriller is constructed: it is not as much about the author misleading us as about us making assumptions. The characters don’t present themselves at the beginning with their neatly time-lined resumes. The mother doesn’t have to be a biological mother, and one can divorce and have different spouses in different periods of one’s life. Similarly, getting into a new relationship doesn’t mean that you are not otherwise attached. But a reader makes an assumption, only to face a big reveal, when in fact the reveal is just another path the character in the book took in the past.

It doesn’t happen often that I devour an audiobook so quickly. It was almost uncomfortable at times because the characters are strong, usually cocky or condescending, and even when they are in distress, it’s hard to sympathize with them (well, maybe a little…) There are no comic relief moments there. The novel is dark but very rewarding as a reading experience, when one can be totally immersed in a book. The recording was perfect, and benefited immensely from the reading actors’ skills, as their voices matched the characters’ personalities impeccably. Domestic psychological thrillers became very popular in recent years, and it can be hard to find something fresh in this genre. “My Husband’s Wife”  by Alice Feeney is, in my opinion,  one of the best options out there.
